It can be easy to take security for granted, especially if you live in a low crime area, or have never been the victim of a crime such as burglary or intrusion, before, but it never pays to do so.
To make sure that your home is as secure as it can possibly be, no matter where you live or how unlikely you believe the prospect of a burglary or intrusion to be, check whether you’ve paid enough attention and engaged enough security measures, to the following 4 areas of your home:
- The yard or lawn
The simple act of failing to maintain your yard or lawn, can be an indicator that the property is vacant, and even if you’re very much at home, but simply hate gardening or yard work, this could see you targeted by thieves.
Overgrown bushes and foliage can also provide a screen for intruders, and should you need to exit your home quickly or emergency personnel need to get to your front door, this issue could make life hard.
- Lighting
Rarely will you find a criminal desperate enough to break into a home or business that is lit up like a Christmas tree, but if yours has got plenty of dark spots and shadows, you could find all manner of persons lurking there with criminal intent. If you don’t want your home or business to be illuminated all thorough the night, invest in motion sensor lights, which light up the area only when they detect movement.
- Doors and windows
Are the locks on your doors and windows giving you enough protection? Do you have deadbolts and/or reinforced locks? Do you leave your windows open when you’re away from the property or in bed asleep? The quickest and most effective way to determine whether your doors and windows are secure enough, is to have a residential or commercial locksmith come and assess the property. Not only will they be able to advise you of any vulnerabilities or weak spots in your existing security measures, but they’ll be able to carry out any repairs or upgrades, then and there, giving you immediate peace of mind.
- Key Access
Who you give your keys to, can play a significant role in the overall security of your home or business, and you should always try to be aware of exactly how many copies of keys you have, who has them, and reassess why they have them. Ultimately, the fewer people who have your keys, the less the risk is of them being lost or stolen, or even duplicated, and the safer you and your home or business, will be.
Have you checked that each of the items on the list above are adequately covered by security measures? Or do you need a local locksmith to help you with security at your home or business? Every property will have its weak spots, just make sure that yours don’t go unchecked.
