Access Control Credentials Compared

A credential is what a person uses to open a door — a proximity card, smart card, fob, PIN, mobile phone, or fingerprint. They differ mostly in security and convenience. Old proximity cards are cheap but easy to clone; smart cards, mobile credentials, and biometrics are far harder to copy. Here is how they stack up.

Proximity cards and fobs

The classic tap-to-enter credential. Cheap and easy, but older 125 kHz prox cards send an unencrypted number that can be copied with a cheap device. Fine for low-risk doors; not for high-security areas.

Smart cards

Smart cards (like 13.56 MHz encrypted cards) protect their data with encryption, so they are very hard to clone. This is the modern standard for card-based access.

PIN codes

A number typed on a keypad. Nothing to carry, but codes spread among staff and should be changed often. Best on low-traffic back doors.

Mobile credentials

Your phone becomes the key. Credentials are encrypted, you can issue or revoke them instantly from software, and there is nothing physical to lose or hand off. Great for high-turnover teams.

Biometric credentials

Yes. For high-security doors you can require two factors — a card and a PIN, or a phone and a fingerprint — so one lost credential isn’t enough to get in.
