Since the late 1990s, nearly every car carries an immobilizer: a receiver near the ignition reads a radio chip in your key and compares it with a list stored in the car’s computer. A match starts the engine. A correct blade with an unprogrammed chip does not. Programming puts the car in a secure learning state, writes the new key to the list and, in security work, removes identities that should no longer be trusted.

There are three methods. OBD programming connects a diagnostic tool to the car’s port and is how most vehicles, most keys, most days are done, sometimes with a security PIN and sometimes with a built-in waiting period that the technician manages. When diagnosis points there, you hear it with the evidence. A plain metal key from the pre-chip era needs only an accurate cut, and nobody should charge you a programming fee for it. Careless programming on a late model car can corrupt immobilizer data, so use a licensed locksmith.
