What to do if your Honda Ignition Key Won’t Turn
Let’s say that you’re trying to turn on your Honda or Acura car and the car won’t turn, and the ignition won’t start.
Hat do you do then?
Usually if you have that happen, you’ll need to replace or repair them.
Sometimes, if you leave it going though and continue to try, sometimes it’ll get stuck in your ignition lock, and then, you won’t be able to turn it on.
What do you do then?
This is a common problem for Honda and Acura models because they are laser cut, and they tend to get broken or worn much faster than other car models.
The most Common Reasons why Your Car Won’t Turn
There are a few reasons why your car key won’t turn.
First, it might be due to worn keys. When keys are damaged or worn down it may cause wafers in your lock cylinder, which is essentially damage to the pins in the key. These pins are what lock in the key to the lock cylinder, so you can’t take it out, and it won’t unlock.
The wafers also may be damaged or worn as well. These can be worn down in some cases, and it may prevent the key themselves from rotating. Sometimes, it might be removed, and the engine can still run, but you can’t turn it off.
Finally, it might be due to a key is bent. Maybe it was inserted the wrong way, and this does cause damage to the pins, and then causes failure of the ignition lock. Sometimes it damages the cylinder as well.
What To Do
If your key doesn’t turn in the cylinder of your Honda, you have two options: replacing the ignition lock and cylinder or repair the key and the cylinder.
Usually, people just call a car dealer to handle this one, but this can be expensive and take a lot of time.
In some cases, you might need to tow the car to the dealer, and they charge $600-800 for this.
But there is a cheaper alternative. By calling us at Golden Locks, Inc., we can come out and get the ignition cylinder replaced or fix your key so that it starts the car. You don’t even need to tow the car or go anywhere, since our technicians will come out and fix this for a fraction of what a dealer charges.
This does take about two hours to replace, but once it’s finished, you’ll have an ignition that works.
The steps to fixing this include the following:
- Remove the cylinder from the place it’s held
- -Disassemble it
- -Replace the wafers which are damaged with new ones
- Put it all back together and put the ignition cylinder back in the housing
- -Cut a new key and program it
If you have keys that are bent, that does cause damage to the wafer.
Usually this is seen when it sticks out from where it was inserted, resulting in a dysfunctional key which won’t turn or start.
But once it’s repaired like in the image above, the wafers are all in place, and when the key is inserted, it will move and start the car.
Our technicians at Golden locks, Inc. are experienced and have repaired a variety of different ignitions in Honda and Acura cars, along with other models. We can guarantee that the process will be quick, and once done you’ll have an ignition that turns, and a key that’s functional and will last for years to come.
Ignition Replacement
In some rare instances, our technicians might discover that there’s no way to replace this due to the damage within the cylinder and working on a simple repair won’t fix this.
In that case, we’ll recommend that this will be replaced with a new ignition housing.
It’s quicker, but a lot more expensive since you need a new lock cylinder and a whole new key.
The key will be different than what came with the car, so you will need to have the old and the new key to unlock the doors and to start the car.
Usually, with this, it should only be done on newer models since usually if it’s high-mileage this tends to happen quite often. But our team at Golden Locks Inc. can help you figure out whether to repair or replace the cylinder, and to get you back driving once again as fast as we can.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Yes of course! We can help fix the ignition, regardless of model.
Sadly, it’s common for these to completely fail. The best solution is to fix this immediately and have a functioning key.
Don’t use the stiff key, only using the one that turns. At one point, you may find that it’s hard to even turn this, which might be a sign of it malfunctioning. This eventually does happen, so make sure to replace it before it does.
